PC Troubleshooting Steps to Try Before You Call A Computer Repair

Most of us no longer have any idea of quite how to live without access to a computer and the Internet on a daily basis any more. That is why when your PC starts playing up it is more than a little frustrating. You pay hundred of dollars for a top of the line model and it still runs slowly, freezes and then that dreaded blue screen of death (or worse) pops up.

If your PC starts misbehaving often the only recourse in the end is to find a good computer repair person. However, even those guys and girls tend to suggest you try a few of the following trouble shooting tips before you give them a call:

* Don’t Panic! – The first thing to do when your PC goes haywire is to try to do your best to stay calm. That can limitedly be tough if your computer has suddenly gone on the fritz and you were in the middle of creating (an as yet unsaved) twenty page report for work but getting upset is only going to make matters worse.

* Backup if You Can – A good PC parent will make a habit of backing up the data on their machines on a regular basis. The problem is that many of us just are not that organised but when things start going wrong if you can still get in to back up your files, do it. And then when your computer is all better write yourself a HUGE note to remember to continue doing so.

* Reboot – Sometimes something as simple as a quick reboot is all it takes to solve minor PC problems. Its always worth a shot anyway…

* Check all the Cords and Wires – Silly as it might seem many a computer tech has stories about customers who though their PCs had died and gone to Silicone Heaven only to find out that the real problem was that the cat (or the kid) had pulled the power cord out! Make sure that everything is connected the way it should be and that there isn’t a problem with the actual electric socket you have it all plugged into.

* Think Back – Think back and figure out what you might have done differently recently, before your PC started going a bit funny. Have you installed new software? Surfed to an Internet site with a lot of pop ups? Downloaded something from an Internet destination you had never visited before? Even if that information is not of much help to you its one of the first things a professional computer repair person is going to ask you to help them diagnose what ails your computer.

* Run a Virus Check – If you still have the access to be able to do so run a virus check, even if the scheduled one only ran a few hours ago. If you don’t have a virus checker to run you may have a real problem. Before disaster ever occurs make sure you have a decent one installed.

* Don’t Mess Too Much – If you are not much of a tech geek there is a limit to how much tinkering around in your PC’s OS you should do. Some people have a tendency to head to Google and spend time reading through complicated instructions about BIOS systems and partitions that they really only half understand and then end up making everything far worse.
